3c - Engaging Students in Learning
Successful attention grabbing can always be a challenge, however there are a variety of tools that I have used in the classroom that have been successful. One tool I have used in the room this year has been a light up microphone. Students enjoy hearing my voice in different tones, but elevating my voice also ensures their attention. Students also appreciate moments when the microphone is in their hands and other students are giving them their attention.

3e - Demonstrating Lesson Flexibility and Responsiveness
Lessons don't always go as planned and sometimes you have to try new things. Manipulatives are fine for the first time around, but candy is always better. On our first introduction to fractions, students were enjoying using colored chips and getting to write on the table. The next day, I decided to sweeten the lesson, literally, by adding candy to the mix. This strong foundation of units, wholes, numerators, and denominators stuck with them throughout the unit. As someone who could never remember what was the numerator and what was the denominator, I'm glad that a little quick thinking and worksheet creating helped my kids remember those pieces they needed to know.
